The area surrounding Haltwhistle has been populated since Roman times and the town is apparently mentioned in the Domesday Book and one of the original spellings of the town's name Haut Whysile means high boundary.

The parish church is Holy Cross and is believed to date from the 9th century. Its earliest mention appears to be in a grant of 1178 by William the Lion of Scotland to the Abbey of Arbroath. The church also has a 7th century water stoup believed to have been used by St Paulinus

As well as laying claim to being the geographical centre of Britain, Haltwhistle certainly acts as a centre for walks of varying lengths and levels of difficulty, and boasts the second-largest open-air swimming pool complex in the north. The pool is heated to 85 degrees (like and indoor pool) and has great facilities for families, whether on a day out or a family holiday.

Haltwhistle is a popular base for walkers and those who wish to explore the area's fascinating Roman heritage and impressive natural scenery. The town is within easy reach of some of the best preserved sites, museums and roman forts on Hadrian's Wall, and offers a bus connection to the Wall in the summer months.

Haltwhistle, Northumberland, is reputedly at the Centre of Britain, although this may be a debateable claim, since no mention of the Shetland Islands to the north of Scotland is made on local signposts. The town is an excellent centre for exploring the Lake District, Northumberland, the North Pennines and Hadrian's Wall.
